Our thanks to all who supported the event through their attendance. It was also wonderful to hear parents and teachers speak so positively about the YWPA award process and how worthwhile they felt the endeavour was.
Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Awards program, now in its second decade, is open to young women from the ages of 16 to 20, who are attending high school in the Greater Victoria area. The entrants are evaluated on their responses to five essay topics concerning the status of women locally and internationally. The YWPA awards recognize the commitment of these students to the volunteer sector, their leadership achievements, and their dedication to the advancement of the status of women. The entrants are all exceptional young women; what they have to say inspires optimism for the future. Three young women will be chosen by a panel of three judges. The top award is $1,500 with 2 additional awards of $500 each.
See below for some highlights from last year's event....

And our finalist moved on.....
Emily Claire Peiffer, YWPA finalist from the Zonta Club of Victoria, is the District 8 Award Winner for Zonta's Young Women in Public Affairs Competition!
District 8 includes Alaska, British Columbia, down to the California border and across to and including Idaho. Emily now moves on to compete at the International level. Zonta International, although it is in 68 countries and made up of 1200 clubs, is divided into only 29 districts so she is one of a maximum of 29 young women in the world who will be competing for the International Award. Zonta Victoria is extremely proud of Emily!
Emily has recently received a scholarship for full tuition and living expenses, renewable for 3 years with an A-averate, at St Thomas University in Fredricton, New Brunswick. She will be leaving in August for 4 weeks in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she will be working with young girls aged 8-14 who have been physically, emontionally and/or sexually abused. After her month in Mexico she will be going straight to Fredricton.
